(Dupin No. 553). This is the last of the major treatises of the French Institutes of Law that remained a reference throughout the 19th century. Serres belonged to the comparative branch of the French school of law, whose origins can be traced back to Cujas. Its aim was to determine the true place of Roman law and other sources of law within the positive legal order. It proceeded by comparing principles and legislation, a method from which it derives its name.
