folio, mottled calfskin, spine with raised bands decorated with fleurons, red morocco title page, marbled edges, initials and vignettes, engraving outside the text representing a Roman god killing a dragon, (covers stained, slightly rubbed and with some wormholes, abrasions at the hinge, bumped corners, cover soiled and restored preventing the book from being fully opened, with some small losses in the upper margin, marginal dampstains), 12 f.-279 p.
Copy of the first posthumous edition of Dumoulin's Consultations (conforming to the copy in the Library of Congress, V. no. 91227388). These texts, among the author's re-edited points, contain essential information on the general theory of law (see Consultation 43 on simulation; Consultation 4 on the law of nations concerning rivers, and especially concerning possession and the law applicable to the Rhine; Consultation 17 on the study of the family of the Landgraf of Katzenelnbogen). But beyond the substantive issues, it is Dumoulin's legal vision that is magnificently analyzed in these texts (on the value of interpretation versus the text itself of a convention - point 12 of Consultation 27 -; on the methods of demonstration and presumption - point 8 of Consultation 28 -; on unusual clauses that render instruments suspect - point 16 of Consultation 31 -; on the effect of general clauses - point 4 of Consultation 49 - …). Rare.
