This treatise is an expanded edition, by M. Valette, of Proudhon's Course on the Napoleonic Code, which notably contains essential developments on Articles 1 and 2 of the Civil Code relating to the function of law and the role of jurisprudence. Laferrière (History of French Law, vol. 2, p. 403) states that Proudhon “contributed greatly to illustrating the legal science of the new France” and cites this treatise among the works of the province's jurists that constitute “one of the glories of the country.”
