Quarto, mottled brown calf, spine with raised bands and gilt decoration, covers framed with a double gilt fillet, marbled edges, initials, friezes, and vignettes. The work is adorned with numerous wood-engraved royal portraits and coats of arms within the text. Old bookplate, old annotations on a flyleaf detailing the contents of the book. (Spine cracked, significant wear to the leather, damaged headcaps, split joints, losses to the edges and corners, paper slightly yellowed, some foxing, small loss at the bottom margin of the title page), see below.
The work consists of: 1. - the Collection of the Kings of France, their crown and house (318 pp.); 2. - Volume II containing the Wars and Peace Treaties, Truces and Alliances, between the Kings of France and England (1601) (298 pp.); 3. - the Collection of the ranks of the Grandees of France, dedicated to King Charles IX (1601); 4. - Annotations on the content of the chapter on the first branch of Burgundy; 5. - the Abridged Chronicle of the Kings of France (342 pp.); 6. - the Continuation of the Abridged Chronicle (72 pp.); 7. - a Memoir and advice on the liberties of the Gallican Church from p. 73 to p. 188 (2 pp.); 8. - of the Table of Contents for the Collection of the Kings of France and for the Treatise on the Rank of the Great. This exceptional work contains in the 1st book an annotated genealogy of the kings of France from Merovech to Charles IX as well as a general dissertation on the origin of the French, the names and surnames of the French and the ancient laws of the French, in the 2nd book an extremely interesting analysis of the laws governing the kingdom of France and studying in particular the title, the authority, the prerogatives of the kings of France, the way in which they are consecrated, the regencies of the kingdom, the organization of the royal household with a very precise description of all the administrative functions (mayor of the palace, admiral of France, grand chef of France, grand butler, grand baker, etc) as well as the analysis of the councils of the kings (privy council, etc). This is a truly exceptional work, written by one of the highest-ranking officials in the royal administration, and constitutes a kind of treatise on royal organization at the end of the 16th century. We have here the most sought-after and complete edition; later editions (1618) added nothing of importance to the 1602 version (Dupin, ref. 910; Brunet, ref. II-923; Saffroy, ref. I-10257).
