We possess the last edition published during the author's lifetime; the 1667 edition was merely a reprint. This text is a comprehensive summary of the workings of the consistories and the organization of worship. Huisseau's positions, which ran counter to the consistory and the Synod, led to his removal from his position as pastor and his exclusion from Holy Communion. The Discipline of the Reformed Churches, along with the Confession of Faith, is one of the essential texts produced by the Reformed Churches for the governance of their churches. It was drafted in Paris during the first national synod of the French Reformed Churches in 1559, and then constantly revised and expanded until the last French synod in 1659, held in Loudun. This text, which marks a break with the Catholic hierarchy, organizes the French Reformed Church on the Genevan model, notably with pastors elected by the members of the communities. It is composed of ten chapters, dealing respectively with: ministers and the laying on of hands, schools, elders and deacons, the diaconate, the consistory, the union of churches, colloquies, provincial synods, national synods, the sacred exercises of the faithful, baptism, the Lord's Supper, marriages, and particular regulations.
