This is a record of the Estates-General of January 26, 1593, convened by the Duke of Mayenne, a leader hostile to Henry IV, whose aim was to elect a Catholic king. This collection is a collaborative work blending prose and verse. It is remarkable as much for its content and the historical significance of the debates as for the sublime eloquence of its authors. It includes the procession led by Rector Rose, intended to review all the forces of the Catholic League; the speeches of the Duke of Mayenne, the papal legate, Cardinal de Pelvé, and especially that of Aubray, deputy of the Third Estate, in which Pierre Pithou depicts the misfortunes of the French people, reproaches them for their blindness, and reminds them of the alliance between the people and the national monarchy, which was to be France's only salvation at that time. The Catholicon is attributed to Pierre Le Roy, the verses to Passerat and Pierre Rapin, and the speeches to J. Gillot, who collaborated with Flor. Chrestien and P. Pithou. The first official edition dates from 1594, and the text went through numerous publications until the end of the 18th century. The edition we present here is among the rarest and retains the value of the first edition.
