    It was Charles VII in 1438 who promulgated this ordinance, which limited the rights of the Roman Curia to the benefit of the royal power, particularly concerning the appointment of bishops and abbeys and the collection of revenues. Rome condemned these decrees, which gave France a distinctly Gallican spirit. Despite Louis XI's abrogation of the Pragmatic Sanction in 1461, it remained in force until the Concordat of Bologna, signed in 1516 between Francis I and Leo X. We have here the only edition in an exceptionally well-preserved contemporary binding.
