5 vols. in-8, mottled fawn half-leather, smooth spines decorated, gilt titles and volumes on olive-colored paper, roll on the edges, yellow edges, handwritten Ex-Libris of Gilbert Boucher, work bearing the handwritten signature [and not reproduced as usual] of the author, (skin wear, slight accidents to the headcaps on 3 vols., losses to the edges and corners, joint slightly split in vol. I, some foxing).
A captivating work describing the institutional, legal, and judicial systems of Germany, England, and France up to the 18th century. It is a foundational work for the scholarly study of 19th-century legal history. In particular, its rigorous comparative analysis of transitional law is noteworthy, revealing a striking resemblance to the laws recently enacted in the Netherlands at that time. Meyer corresponded with such renowned legal scholars as Merlin and Pardessus, Savigny and Mittelmaïer, and Cooper. This work brought the author to prominence throughout contemporary Europe; he was also deeply involved in the struggle for Jewish emancipation in the Netherlands. Rare latest edition. Dupin, 2019.
