Jacques Poumarède (in *Science politique et droit public dans les facultés européennes*, edited by J. Krynen) emphasizes that Dadine d'Auteserre was practically the only 17th-century professor of law in Toulouse to whom we owe the overall improvement of the Faculty's academic standards and the renown of the teachings in the Toulouse colleges. The present text displays the methods of legal humanism of an Alciati or a Cujas, notably through the significant emphasis placed on the philological and grammatical exegesis of Roman texts, as well as on historical explanations. However, this treatise should be seen more as a comprehensive course in civil law than a study of Roman law. Its approach is, moreover, quite critical of the state and, even at the time, attracted the interest of neighboring countries, which translated these works well into the 18th century.
