(Dupin No. 981). FIRST EDITION. Gilles Le Maistre was First President of the Parliament of Paris in the mid-16th century and one of the most eminent practicing jurists of the time. His works were published only posthumously. They were constantly reprinted throughout the 17th century. This work contains a treatise on amortization (the royal right to reallocate fiefs acquired by mortmain), a treatise on fiefs and homage, a treatise on regalia (that is, the entirety of royal rights in matters of legislation, justice, taxes, public services, etc.), a treatise on public auctions (the procedure for adjudicating seized property), and a treatise on appeals and abuses (that is, the settlement of conflicts arising from the encroachments of ecclesiastical courts on secular courts). This work is remarkably readable. It is also a valuable collection of legal maxims in the vernacular that appeared during the 16th century (see, e.g., p. 30 “a lord of butter eats a vassal of steel”, p. 72 “money put in the bank is real estate”).
