At a time when feudal and seigneurial rights were being severely challenged by commentators on customs, Denis de Salvaing undertook to classify them. “[He] first presents fiefs as ‘skeletons stripped of the sinews that supported them,’ essentially a bloodless institution. Then, among the rights, he contrasts unusual and absurd duties with those whose form is reasonable.” (in *La rédaction des coutumes et les droits seigneuriaux* by Martine Grinberg, *Annales HSS*, 1997). Edition published during the author's lifetime. Dupin, ref. 1569.
