This edition, the last, is in fact a revision of the first edition of his commentary on custom, published in 1693, and of his Institutions of French Law from the same year. It must be noted that the 18th century did not do justice to the author's work: Dupin (ref. 1213-16 & 17) mentions that the author was vigorously contested by the Sorbonne, particularly for his mixing of disciplines (jurisprudence, morality, and theology); A. A. Barbier (Historical Dictionary, p. 266) writes that he was “a hardworking and upright magistrate,” but that his commentary on custom “is highly regarded and has been reprinted many times.” Upon closer examination, one finds that R. de la Bigotière provides us with one of the most comprehensive commentaries on the law of obligations (over 100 pages on its own) and on inheritance (just under 100 pages). Finally, we have here a unique copy due to its provenance: as indicated by the bookplate and the few handwritten lines opposite the title page, it belonged to the Count of Corbière, minister to Charles X, in Villèle's cabinet. It was subsequently kept in Rennes at the “Hôtel de Corbière” (3, rue de Corbin) by Madame Dubois de la Bégassière.
