Demante, although he collaborated with Jourdan on the journal Thémis in his early career, was also a pure legal scholar. A professor in Paris from 1822 to 1856, and an admirer of Duranton from the outset, he was, like Valette, a member of the Constituent Assembly and the Legislative Assembly, and in 1849, he chaired the Mortgage Reform Commission. His work is highly original and remains very useful today. In 1830, he began publishing a very simple book entitled "Programme d'un Cours de droit civil" (Program for a Course in Civil Law), which he republished in 1849 under the title "Cours analytique de Code civil" (Analytical Course on the Civil Code) (Gaudemet, "L'interprétation du Code civil depuis 1804" [The Interpretation of the Civil Code Since 1804], La Mémoire du Droit, p. 104). This course already has the scope of an elementary treatise, earning the approval of modern authors. All the themes dear to the author are extensively developed, and this program constitutes, in many respects, a solid summary of his Analytical Course, of which he would only write the first three volumes, dying in 1855.
