Poullain du Parc is best known for his “petite coutume” (a more accessible work) in which he reorganizes the articles by theme and provides brief explanations and references to case law. It should also be noted that the author spent his life analyzing and commenting on more than 2,000 rulings of the Parliament of Brittany. This profound knowledge of customary law and its application allowed him to demonstrate the evolution of the law since the major commentaries of D'Argentré and Hévin. The *Principes du droit françois* (Principles of French Law) should be considered more as a treatise on civil law than as a commentary on articles. He also included a concise study of criminal law, which can be found in the last two volumes of this edition. His contemporaries considered him, at least with regard to private law, to be the foremost legal expert in Brittany. (Dupin, ref. 1213-30)
