Recognized by Jacques Offenbach for his comic talent, J. Moinaux, father of G. Courteline, became a court reporter for La Gazette des Tribunaux and Le Charivari. He drew inspiration from the debates of correctional trials and used them to satirize his era: he highlighted, with a sharp wit, the burlesque aspect of the small courtroom scenes.
