(Dupin No. 1892). Louis Dupin held a doctorate in theology from the Faculty of Paris and was a professor at the Collège Royal. He died in 1719. This treatise on excommunications had a turbulent history. A decree of the Council dated January 8, 1743, ordered its placement on the Index of Prohibited Books and the destruction of all copies. It also fined the bookseller 500 livres for printing a second volume and the collection of documents in violation of bookselling regulations—a second volume that does not appear to have been included in the first printing in 1715. The reasons for placing it on the Index stemmed from the very liberal interpretation of excommunication and a vigorous critique of the abuses that had occurred in the 16th and 17th centuries.
