Until the mid-18th century, collections of judgments were generally presented by their authors in a rather loose chronological or thematic format. Under the influence of the encyclopedic spirit, two authors chose to present their collections of judgments in alphabetical order. Brillon was the first (see above), and Denisart followed. This resulted in texts that were more comprehensive in terms of case law than traditional dictionaries such as those by Ferrière. Moreover, Denisart's text is of exceptional quality, making it a key source for the study of old law. Our copy is from the first quarto edition, which combined the six volumes originally published in duodecimo format. Therefore, we are offering the text in its original form, with the understanding that it underwent updates up until the French Revolution.
