    12mo, contemporary brown calf binding, gilt title on olive paper, spine with five raised bands decorated with gilt fleurons and framing fillets, red speckled edges, gilt roll on the edges, old manuscript bookplate on the title page, (covers slightly rubbed, title slightly faded, gilt slightly worn on the last compartment, slight damage to the headcap, corners slightly bumped), interior very fresh. An old annotation on the first leaf indicates that the book, published under the name of M. Talon, is in fact written by M. Le Vayer (…), [7 leaves]-312-[11 leaves]-71 pages.
    This work had a tumultuous publishing history, to say the least. This, at any rate, is what Dupin (Ref. 2728) says: “This treatise is by Rolland le Vayer de Boutigny, Master of Requests, born in November 1627, died on December 5, 1685. It first appeared in 1682, under the title Dissertations on the King's Authority in Matters of Regalia. Cologne, and only with the initials LV.MDR. The edition had been made from a defective copy. It was published a second time in 1690, as the second volume of a collection printed in The Hague in 1560, under the title History of Ecclesiastical Matters. In 1700, a bookseller in Amsterdam published it as a completely new book, under the title Treatise on the Authority of Kings by Talon. [This is the edition we are presenting here]. The edition was immediately counterfeited in Rouen, under the Amsterdam edition, but in duodecimo. In 1734, a new edition was published in Amsterdam, in octavo, and attributed to Delpech, a councilor in parliament. Finally came the 1753 edition, with the author's true name, based on a copy of the 1682 edition, corrected by Le Vayer.
