The Institutes of Gaius, who lived during the reign of Marcus Aurelius, were overshadowed by the later Institutes of Justinian to such an extent that the complete text was long lost and known only through an abridgment contained in the Breviary of Alaric, promulgated in 506. This text was rediscovered in 1816 on a palimpsest in the library of Verona. The scholarly edition was published in German in 1841. The present text constitutes the first French translation of these Institutes, augmented by a commentary. It thus represents a significant moment in 19th-century Romance studies.
