This work, having been printed by an ecclesiastical printer, required approval which, unlike the Privilege granted by the King, included a substantive assessment of the work, stated as follows: “Although there are a great number of authors who have written on this Custom, such as Terrien, Godefroy, and Basnage, this one, de Pesnelle, nevertheless has his own particular merit: he expresses himself with great clarity; he demonstrates a specific knowledge of civil law, from which several articles of this wise Custom were drawn; he very judiciously discerns the diversity of opinions among the commentators who preceded him.” Furthermore, written after 1666, it contains numerous comparisons with the Ordinances of Louis XIV and is intended as a reflection on the modernization of private law in Normandy. It concludes with a special section devoted to the local customs of the Norman lordships. A fine copy, both inside and out, of this latest edition.
