A particularly innovative philosophical text by this anti-monarchist lawyer who ended his life heroically. Louis Dubois, in his Historical and Literary Notice on Valazé (Paris, Goujon & Fils, 1802), describes this treatise as follows: “This philosophical work is treated in an analytical, profound, complete, and even novel manner, surpassing the works of Montesquieu, Gravina, Beccaria, Monis, and Pastoret. Valazé expresses himself thus in his Preliminary Discourse: ‘Let time bring about a revolution necessary for the happiness of humankind: the spirit of this century allows us to foresee it; however, let us strive to facilitate it.’” We readily agree with Mallet-Dupan's assessment of this work, when he expressed himself thus: “It is certainly a great idea to establish a classification and determine the degrees of morality of human actions, considered as duties and virtues, as vices and crimes… The entire work is characterized by a methodical approach. The author has addressed the question of the death penalty in a separate chapter: it is an effort of logic, reason, and humanity. No one has perceived this subject and presented it from a clearer perspective than the author of the Penal Laws… This doctrine, so natural and so comforting, Valazé discusses and establishes with as much force as depth… By its importance, by the philosophy—that is to say, by the spirit of reflection, increasingly rare, that accompanies this work—and by its entirely new insights, it will be placed among the very few truly useful writings. The style is consistent with The object, simple and clear in its discussion, engaging without pretension to engage, and modest without timidity.” A very rare work.
