“Moraze wanted to give us a history of industrialization, commercial development, and the global spread of Western European technologies. ‘For 150 years, science and progress chose the bourgeoisie of Europe. Science and progress choose those who serve them best.’ Three pivotal dates provide us with broad overviews: 1780, before the upheavals of the French Revolution; 1830–1840, on the eve of the great expansion of the railways; and finally, 1900, at the height of the bourgeois conquest. A vibrant book, teeming with richness. We are thinking, in particular, of the density of the engaging syntheses in chapters 5 (“The Bourgeoisie Takes Hold”) and 9 (“Industrial Nationalisms”). Admittedly, one might criticize this torrent for sometimes carrying, ‘along with the golden flakes of ingenious insights and pertinent observations, the muddier alluvium of errors and approximations.’” But in fact, this work is above all an “essay”, a set of “variations on a theme”, in the manner of a musical work, and, as such, it is very much in the spirit of Lucien Febvre, who died prematurely, before seeing the first pillar of the “Destins du monde” collection erected, for which he had conceived the plan and distributed the material.” (P. Val, in Population, no. 4/1958, p. 736).
