Internationally renowned, Jean Begat was chosen by the King of Spain to establish the territorial boundaries of Franche-Comté with the Swiss cantons. As a member of Parliament, he was, along with the First President of La Guesle, Vintimille, and Bretagne, appointed to reform the customary law of Burgundy, and it was under his name that the notebooks of the commissioners responsible for the reform were printed. These notebooks were of great importance in Burgundian legal doctrine (M. Petitjean, Dictionnaire historiques des juristes français, Paris, PUF, 2007). Dupin (ref. 1210-10) indicates that "this book, filled with errors and maxims contrary to legal practice, was condemned," particularly following a previous ruling. A new edition appeared in 1717 with the addition of remarks by Jean Villers and commentaries by Jean Guillaume.
