    “This author is the most remarkable and prolific commentator on the customs of his province. […] All his works were authoritative in their time.” And his main interest, even today, lies in his questioning of the Romanizing spirit of the customary law as written and reformed in 1539 under the authority of President Lizet. He criticizes it in particular for having focused “on the minutiae of Roman law,” for having failed to recognize “the superiority of customary law, which in practice translates into a reference to the Custom of Paris.” Even though he admires and uses Roman law as a foundational element of French law, the author draws inspiration, as a model, from Philippe de Beaumanoir, Du Moulin, and Guy Coquille. (cf. J. Vendrand-Voyer, Dictionnaire historique des juristes français, Paris, PUF, 2007). We have here the second and final, complete edition [the first dates from 1693] of the Traité du Franc-aleu.
