It is Dupin (ref. 1860) who informs us of the authorship of these preparatory works for the Civil Code, which he attributes to Favard de Langlade, then a tribune, later president of the Court of Cassation and a State Councillor. This collection predates, by one year, the same author's Conferences on the Civil Code. The publisher's statement tells us considerably about the usefulness and quality of this text: "This collection, directed by a jurist who contributed to the drafting of the Civil Code, is as complete as one could wish for. It has already achieved great success and the approval of the highest magistrates. (...) This work, in which one finds the entire thought of the legislator, is the only commentary that one can consult with confidence." Our copy has the particularity that its first volume comes from the second edition entitled "Napoleonic Code"; In particular, it indicates all the changes made between the two editions, notably the replacement of the words "the Government" by "the Emperor", "the Nation" by "the State", "the State" by "the Emperor" or even that magnificent formula "The Government may nevertheless" by "Nevertheless it is permissible for the Emperor to grant…"!
