in-12, full mottled calf, gilt title on green paper, smooth spine decorated with gilt tools and friezes, marbled edges, (some wormholes on the spine, small loss to the title paper, worn corners with some losses, traces of humidity on the last gatherings), XIX-422 p.
This is Abbé Desfontaines' translation of the Latin work *Ritum quæ apud Romanos obtinuerunt succinta explicatio*, with notes by M. Nagel. Long considered the best practical guide to Roman institutions and customs, it is particularly valuable for its analysis of the method of electing magistrates and the status accorded to them. The work is made very practical by an extremely detailed table of contents of 67 pages (Dupin, ref. 455 for the Latin editions).
