    Berriat, in his history of Roman law (p. 165), states, “We therefore believe that a lawyer should have in his library editions of the pure text and of the two glosses, or at least of that of Denis Godefroy.” This refers to the collection of the most important works of Roman law: the Corpus Juris Civilis, the Institutionum, the Digestorum seu Pandectarum, the Codicis Justiniani, the Novellae Constitutiones, and the Feurorum Consuetudines, with commentaries still considered the best by Denis Godefroy. From the perspective of the text, the corpus established by Godefroy enjoyed considerable success. A very rare first edition, published in Lyon by Vincent Bartholomé in 1583, is missing from the Cujas collection and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BnF). Highly sought after.
