This is a prime example of a work that at first glance seems anecdotal and innocuous. And yet. Published the year in which road traffic claimed the most victims in France, it reveals a state of road traffic law that had not yet addressed the safety challenges of mass transit: there were no rules concerning alcohol consumption or speed limits on non-urban roads. Through its rich documentation and references to a great deal of administrative grey literature, it nevertheless shows the beginnings of this new body of law that would become established in the 1970s, while also including sections on "animal-drawn vehicles and handcarts" (p. 177). Overall, it is a fascinating source on the interplay between the temporalities of social events and those of law.
