It was in 1698 that Du Pineau's commentary on the Custom of Anjou was published, initially in Latin, and translated by Launay & Nivard. However, it is above all his Observations, Questions, and Answers that establish him as one of the four great commentators on the Custom of Anjou, along with Choppin, de L'Hommeau, and Poquet de Livonnière, who published a "corrected" edition of Du Pineau's commentary (Paris, 1725). Highly critical of his predecessors, whose doctrinal opinions he particularly reproached, Du Pineau adopted the exegetical method, following the order of the articles and systematically seeking the meaning and history of legal concepts in order to propose a better interpretation and solution for understanding the rule (S. Soleil, Dictionnaire historique des juristes français, p. 284). Dupin, ref. 1191-8.
