He therefore had to review almost all the events of our history. For there is, so to speak, none that has not exerted a more or less marked influence on the development of what we call the Third Estate. […] He has brought to light many new facts or facts whose importance had been overlooked. […] The skill he has displayed in grouping the facts, the taste he has shown in choosing details, and above all the unity he has been able to give to such a complex subject, make this essay on the formation and progress of the Third Estate a work as interesting as it is instructive. […] The author's merit is all the greater because he had to accomplish a more difficult task.” Indeed, although we have only recently begun to appreciate, collect, and highlight the monuments of the history of the Third Estate, it must be admitted that for a long time to come it will be impossible for anyone to know all the documents that should form the basis of this history. […] Everything suggests that he has most often encountered the truth, and that subsequent works will confirm his judgments.” (Léopold Delisle, chronicle in the Bibliothèque de l’École des chartes, 1853, pp. 512–514)
