Lawyer and politician Jules Favre was one of the most fervent opponents of Napoleon III and served as Minister in Thiers' Government of National Defense. This collection of legal arguments covers all the major issues concerning rights and civil liberties in the 19th century: freedom of the press, slavery, the status of colonized indigenous peoples, and the status of political criminals (see especially the trial of the Italian independence leader Orsoni). These arguments demonstrate the legal strategies employed by Republicans against authoritarian regimes and thus constitute an essential record of the work of the liberal bar during the 19th century.
