As J. Hilaire points out (Introduction Historique au Droit Commercial, PUF 1986), legal doctrine on commercial law was relatively sparse at the beginning of the 19th century and largely confined to exegetical commentary on the commercial code. This little-known work is therefore a highly valuable source for the history of commercial law, as it presents an analytical summary of the case law not only of the Court of Cassation but also of the Courts of Appeal and the commercial courts. It thus constitutes an important source for studying how lower court judges approached the realities of the subject. Furthermore, the judgments are cited with references to various journals and annotated codes.
