Published in 1707, *The Sacred Theater of the Cévennes* is one of the first books devoted to the fighters of the Desert, published as a form of testimony following the War of the Cévennes, or Camisard uprising, which ushered in the 18th century (marked between 1702 and 1704) to demand freedom of conscience. It had only been reprinted once, by Ami Bost in 1847. Even then, it was almost a completely different work, so extensive had its presentation been revised and its text expanded. The Presses du Languedoc edition is intended for a wider audience. It uses modern typography and displays the book's design. The book is introduced at length by Jean-Pierre Richardot, "writer and journalist," who draws particularly on the work of Philippe Joutard. The text has been supplemented with explanatory notes. A welcome illustration has also been added. A chronology, a brief bibliography, and a map have been added, among other supplementary material.
