(Grandin I-340) This collection enjoyed great success in the 19th century (it went through six editions between 1830 and 1867). Published by the editorial team of the Journal de Procédure, it was the only journal of the time devoted exclusively to this subject. It made excellent use of its alphabetical index format, as important articles were developed over several hundred paragraphs with a specific index and table of contents. For example, the entry on "exception" spans 50 pages and 320 paragraphs, while the entry on "cassation" covers 75 pages and 500 paragraphs (with more than four pages of index). It is worth noting that this latter entry was one of the most comprehensive texts available in the mid-19th century. A broader analysis of the work reveals that it is not only concerned with procedure in the strict sense, but also with judicial organization, and even administrative organization when it has implications for procedure. For example, a section is devoted to the Caisse des Dépôts (a French public financial institution), and another to the opinions of the Conseil d'État (a very rare occurrence). The content of the entries contains a meticulous analysis of case law and frequent references to legal scholarship, including that predating the code. Overall, then, this is an essential source on 19th-century civil procedure, regrettably forgotten today.
