4 volumes in 3 vols. in-8, half olive calf Napoleon III style, gilt titles & volumes on spines richly decorated with fleurons, friezes and other geometric motifs, two-color marbled edges (green or red), a very fine copy except for rare traces of use on the binding and some light scattered foxing, [2 ff.]-312-VIII-196 / [2 ff.]-428 / [2 ff.]-544 p.
One of the author's greatest works, in which he examines how Roman sources were received in the Middle Ages and how the customs of various peoples were influenced by ancient precepts. Naturally, it employs the historical and scientific method, with a constant return to primary sources and critical analysis. The high quality of the translation should also be emphasized. This text has become very rare.
