“Ellul has often been accused of negativism, criticized for painting an outrageously bleak picture without offering much hope for improvement or any indication of how to avoid the worst. The lack of concrete proposals for escaping the technological nightmare is said to disqualify his entire analytical framework. This is, first of all, to confuse the role of the diagnostician with that of the therapist, the scientist with the politician. Secondly, it is unfounded because, from his Directives for a Personalist Manifesto to the final volume of his trilogy on revolution, like Rousseau, he does not hesitate to present himself as a physician of the social body, prescribing remedies for the illnesses he himself has identified. But, before calling for revolution, he warns: ‘To prepare for what is to come, we must first know what our world is dying of’ [Ellul, 1945b].” Revolution is desirable, but, according to the Girondin Ellul, it inevitably leads to the strengthening of the State. It is because it has been betrayed that it must be countered with a “necessary revolution” in the personalist sense. But, today, is such a revolution still possible? Revolution, like revolt, until the 20th century was waged against History. It is the effort to divert its logical course. With the revolution of 1789, it is no longer the rejection of a foreseeable future, but the acceleration of a historical movement, because the State then becomes the product of the revolution and no longer the symbol of oppression… (Patrick Chastenet, Introduction to Jacques Ellul, Éd. La Découverte, coll. Repères, 2019, p. 128).
