This work "aims to show the evolution of the wedding liturgy before the reforms of the Council of Trent, following the research of Korbinian Ritzer, *Marriage in the Christian Churches from the 1st to the 11th Century* (Paris, 1970). This work is essentially historical in nature and presents, in a descriptive and critical manner, by analyzing the different moments of the marriage rite, the content of the documents used, that is to say, fundamentally, nineteen rituals or ordines, from diverse geographical origins, gathered here in an appendix, accompanied by very brief historical notes. (...) The introduction, on the evolution of the marriage liturgy up to the 16th century (Chapter I), is followed by the analysis of each of the moments of the rite: the preliminaries of marriage (Chapter II); the consent (Chapter III); the handing over of the spouses (Chapter IV); The blessing of the ring, the dowry, and the marriage contract (Chapter V); the presentation of the ring (Chapter VI); the presentation of the money and the marriage contract (Chapter VII); the prayers and concluding gestures of the rite before Mass (Chapter VIII); the wedding Mass (Chapter IX); the nuptial blessing at the time of communion (Chapter X); the rites upon leaving the church (Chapter XI); the blessing of the bridal chamber (Chapter XII). (...) The study by J.-B. Molin and Professor Mutembe, which required patient research and a capacity for synthesis, opens the possibility of further work and in-depth exploration of the marriage rite, not only in France, but also in other parts of Europe. This, it seems to me, is where their greatest merit lies. May the effort and critical sensitivity of the two authors thus receive their best reward.
