Published in 1976, P. Bonnassie's doctoral thesis on Catalonia between 950 and 1050 is one of the landmark works of medieval history research published in recent years. The study of this Catalan "take-off" offers numerous fascinating perspectives, extending well beyond the established regional and chronological framework. It is an essential starting point for understanding the medieval "contagion" of development, as it spread from the margins of Europe to the central regions. It also provides a broader perspective on the development process, to which the contemporary global economic situation lends current resonance. The century studied by P. Bonnassie is also, in Catalonia, the century of the establishment of the feudal system, a crucial issue, if ever there was one, for the medievalist. (…) The major merit of P. Bonnassie's book lies in its joint study of these factors, its constant highlighting of the relationship between the economic and the social, their interaction, and its offering historians a new model for the establishment of feudal-vassal ties. In Catalonia, the feudal regime did not arise from a slow and gradual degradation of the Carolingian political system; its advent was an acute social crisis, brought about by an economic expansion that disrupted traditional balances. As it is conducted, so solidly documented, so logically structured, P. Bonnassie's work is undeniably a model of historical reflection for years to come.” (Monique Bourin-Gramain, Cahiers de civilisation médiévale, no. April-June 1982, pp. 143-147).
