“(...) a volume from the Royal Commission of History, octavo series, provides us with the text of 26 documents of interest to private law, drawn from an enormous collection in the Mons archives. These documents, dating from 1316 to 1433, were mostly written in Hainaut—sometimes even in towns now part of France, such as Le Quesnoy and Valenciennes—but others originated in the various principalities of the Low Countries, and one even in the bailiwick of Amiens. However, the disparate origin of this collection does not diminish its interest, since it consists solely of wills, parental agreements (pre-emptive divisions of property concluded jointly by the father and mother, assisted by friends of both parties), and marriage contracts. Legal historians will find in these texts—published in full—a wealth of examples concerning matrimonial property regimes and inheritance law.” But philologists, toponymists, and historians of religious life or economics will also find much to their liking. Happy Belgium, which can publish with such care and luxury these documents, so often forgotten in the neglect of municipal archives! (Henri Platelle, Revue du Nord, no. 179/1963, p. 392).
