“While comparative law analyses aim to explain the institutional singularities and specific dynamics of each legal system, history provides fundamental assurances and on-the-ground knowledge; it is, in essence, the ecology of contemporary law, at least to a very large extent irreplaceable. This is why research on the formation of local laws is so valuable, when it does not stray into a private accounting of interpretation, as is still unfortunately the case today. The book reviewed here will be received as an exemplary essay; it only lacks a more invigorating conclusion, one more open to the legislation and jurisprudence of the 20th century. Why, at the end of such a conscientious study teeming with so many important observations, not have added a few remarks on this period beyond the 19th century, our present? The 19th century was so clearly viewed, as the culmination of the general unification of civil rights, that the comparatist will regret the author's omission regarding the 20th century.” But the quibble goes no further, for this work deserves attention, by the breadth of its theme, the firmness of its proposals, the location of the surveys in a region situated at the crossroads of several of the most important currents of influence in Europe.” (Pierre Legendre, RIDC, no. 1/1971, pp. 246-247).
