    This extremely rare work still forms the basis of all historical and scientific research on institutions and their functioning. Even though the origin of these collections of ordinances and regulations remains unclear, these documents reveal a specific legal duality: they highlight legislation imbued with feudal society for the nobility, while the legislation of commoners generally derived from Roman law. These documents were republished by Isambert in his *Recueil des anciennes lois françaises* (Collection of Ancient French Laws).
