"Following the French government's tabling of the new bill reforming matrimonial property regimes, Ms. Labrusse-Riou's work will be received with particular interest. The explanatory memorandum of this bill indicates that a survey conducted in 1963 by the French Institute of Public Opinion revealed that, with regard to matrimonial property regimes, 'a consensus exists to recognize the equality of spouses, and in particular to acknowledge the wife's power to manage her own property.' It must be acknowledged, however, that the reform of German civil law in this area is unique, and one of the major strengths of Ms. Labrusse-Riou's thesis is to highlight this in the first part, devoted to the 'Principle of Equality of Spouses' (pp. 11-54)." The author explains how the authors of the Bonn Constitution—the Basic Law of May 23, 1949—conceived the idea that, in order to establish a true democracy in the Federal Republic of Germany and ensure its maintenance, it was not enough to enshrine the political equality of citizens; it was necessary, as Mr. René David states in his preface to the work, “to infuse this principle of equality into private law itself, to blend it into the daily lives of citizens,” to realize in everyday life the equality of husband and wife.” (P. Kayser, RIDC, Paris 1965, p. 535 et seq.)
