Jules Quicherat's work, *De la formation française des anciens noms de lieu* (On the French Formation of Ancient Place Names), was published in 1867; to address this subject throughout all periods of French history, Quicherat devoted only 84 pages. M. d'Arbois de Jubainville took up a narrowly limited portion of the same subject: he first excluded the names of rivers, mountains, and woods, focusing only on those of inhabited places, and then on all names formed after the Frankish conquest. His exposition, thus reduced to the laws governing the formation of place names in France during the Celtic and Roman periods, occupies 410 pages. This figure demonstrates the development and progress that geographical onomastics, initiated by Quicherat, had undergone during this period. It also allows us to appreciate the meticulous care with which M. d'Arbois de Jubainville and his collaborator have undertaken to explore, in minute detail, the questions raised by this subject of study. The authors have compiled a list of all the roots, proper nouns or common nouns, and all the endings, suffixes, and inflections that make up Gaulish and Roman place names; they have devoted a paragraph to each of these elements, where they have gathered as many examples as possible of the use of the root or ending in question. Detailed and comprehensive tables facilitate the use of this valuable resource for all studies of local antiquities and historical geography.
