octavo, half ivory vellum, gilt title on olive morocco paper with gilt fillets framing, spine decorated with gilt lace, binding with the monogram "J. G. G.", original cover preserved, folding map of ancient Western Asia, very good condition, 633 p.
This first uniform edition brought together the leading specialists in the subjects covered (G. Cardascia for the approach to Eastern problems, J. Imbert for the institutions and political ideas of Greece). Two subsequent editions (1957 and 1963) were edited by Jean Imbert with contributions from G. Sautel and M. Boullet-Sautel. But it must be said quite frankly that the present edition boasts a quality of analysis and a wealth of references that will never be surpassed.
