As J.-L. Halpérin (HDPF since 1804, no. 34) points out, Aubry and Rau "brought about a true revolution in the method of presenting civil law. Not confining themselves to following the Civil Code article by article, they sought to create a reasoned treatise by combining exegetical methods with dogmatic teaching. They also aimed to unite theory and practice by combining the pure logic of a precise and rigorous text with the wealth of extensive notes devoted to case law and the discussion of legal opinions." This edition is not the most common.
