“Mr. Häberli’s book is a good example of attempts to move beyond a strictly technical examination of legal rules by more closely linking the study of the legal instrument to that of the political and economic institutions from which it originates. (…) The first part is essentially an update of international foreign investment law, as presented in previous studies. From this perspective alone, Mr. Häberli’s book is interesting, especially since—and this is its second strength—the update is critical, and international law is examined more in light of new ideas, such as the reciprocity-discrimination dichotomy, than in light of established rights. (…) The second part is a study of the practice and law of Algeria and Ghana regarding investment. The method used is twofold: on the one hand, an analysis of positive legal texts, and on the other hand, field research with officials, or at least some of them.” (…) In conclusion, Mr. Häberli’s book offers an interesting, because critical, update of the theories of international investment law.” (Ph. Kahn, Foreign Policy, No. 1/1980, p. 252 et seq.).
