Merlin's legal directory was known under the Ancien Régime as the Guyot Directory, the last edition having been published in 1784. Merlin of Douai bought it back after the Revolution and completely revised it to reflect the new law. According to Dupin, "Mr. Merlin is a very learned jurist: his works [...] are in every library; they are cited in every trial, and they are still consulted in secret and with profit by those who render them the least justice in public." Merlin's Legal Directory, whose edition brings together all the volumes of legal questions and the very important general index, constituted the most important legal work during the first part of the 19th century. This is the definitive and most complete edition.
