    “If Wicquefort wrote about ambassadors, if he examined diplomatic immunities and the risks of the negotiator’s profession, it was also to defend his own cause. A personal experience thus lies at the origin of an imposing and important work. Wicquefort himself was twice investigated: in 1659 in France, then in 1675 in Holland. In The Ambassador and His Functions, he alludes to these cases: wondering “whether the public prosecutor could be compelled to answer for a crime before the judge of his place of residence,” he notes: “It [the Court of Justice of The Hague] has since explained itself quite clearly in the trial of the Resident of Lüneburg; against the uniform opinion of all those who have written on public law...” – this Resident of Lüneburg being Wicquefort himself, investigated by the Dutch justice system.” At the same time, Wicquefort's work shows that the task of the ambassador is analyzed with increasing detail and precision, which means the development of detailed standards, derived precisely from experience, which Wicquefort synthesizes.
