"There is no doubt that the importance of his work, known far beyond the Belgian borders and especially in France, and the authority acquired by his doctrine amply justified the presentation of a collection of essays to Mr. Roger O. Dalcq upon our eminent colleague's retirement after so many years of teaching at the Catholic University of Louvain. And the volume dedicated to him has the great merit, unlike so many others of this type, which are entirely heterogeneous, of focusing on two main themes—responsibility and insurance—illustrated by numerous writings of the recipient. Indeed, only four or five of the thirty-two contributions gathered here, signed by almost all the leading figures in Belgian and French legal scholarship in these two areas, have no apparent connection to these two central questions. Therefore, this fine volume deserves a place not only in every university library, but also in those of all specialists." Not wishing to transform this report into a catalogue of the topics covered and the names of their authors, nor into an impossible ranking, it seems more useful to emphasize two general points. First, it is clear that the important problems concerning liability are the same everywhere. These include, in particular, compensation for the consequences of traffic accidents, the possible generalization of vicarious liability, medical and hospital liability, especially, but not exclusively, with regard to transfusions of contaminated blood, subcontracts, and administrative liability. Second, the reader cannot help but be struck by the importance attached by Belgian legal scholars to comparative law. It will certainly come as no surprise that French law is a particular focus for our colleagues, as many of the topics chosen for their contributions demonstrate; but Dutch, German, Swiss, and British law are also constant sources of reference and reflection for them. (G. Durry, RIDC No. 4/1994, p. 1205).
