Taparelli d'Azeglio is often considered one of the first true Catholic sociologists and political and legal philosophers. His work, published between 1840 and 1843, is considered by many to be at the source of modern sociology, even if precursor does not necessarily mean innovator! It was translated into German as early as 1845 and into French in 1851. In it, he develops the idea, immediately widely accepted in conservative circles across continental Europe, that the normal origin of civil government was simply an extension of paternal power through the patriarchal head of a group of families. This essay was later abridged into an Elementary Course in Natural Law, translated into French in 1864 and into Spanish in 1875. It was used as a reference work by the University of Modena. This first edition is very rare.
